In the modern world of instant digital communication, memes are a unique form of connection as they help people from different geographical locations, generations, and lifestyles bond over a shared sense of humor. Two strangers can bond over references to memes they’ve both seen on the Internet, and realize that despite this being the first time they’ve met, they already have an entire history of shared inside jokes.
For Alix Lu, an influencer with a major in design and a strong affinity for Internet trends and culture, meme curation came to her as naturally as breathing. In a few short years, she managed to grow her meme Instagram account to an impressive number of followers, building a name for herself as a powerful social media presence.
“As someone that curates a popular meme account, I consider it part of my responsibility to help shape what messages are sent out in my small sphere of influence,” begins Alix. “Internet culture, particularly the more subversive parts of it where a lot of memes originate, tends to be laced with misogyny. I make it a priority to filter out any content that pushes a narrative that is harmful to women.”
Alix saw the power of meme-sharing platforms, but noticed that a lot of content gets recycled through Instagram Reels, TikTok, and other popular social media platforms. In the hopes of finding fresher content, she started searching through Discord, and her page started gaining even more popularity. Memes eventually became an integral part of her.
“I think this is something that will always be part of my personality and interests,” Alix continues. “I’m also thankful to have met so many interesting friends online who I would have likely never interacted with in person.”
However, despite her successes in the world of memes and internet humor, the ever-evolving landscape of technology started demanding more energy and effort to keep up with, ultimately leading to Alix reconsidering her role. She scaled back her involvement, left most of the Discord servers, and returned to more passively posting content. To her surprise, the page continued to attract attention.
“I have a feeling we might be on the cusp of a technological revolution that may reshape how humans live on a fundamental level,” Alix explains. “As a result, I’m focused on making sure I’m flexible enough to adapt to whatever comes next.”
While she continues to make content and stay true to her passion for memes, she has recently decided to shift more of her focus to starting a design studio. She knew there was more out there
for her to pursue beyond social media management, and she wanted to keep a more grounded approach to her career. She had previous experience with a design/art internship at NASA, and has also worked management roles at a technology company.
As she reinvents herself, she takes care to still give back to her community and stay passionate about organizations that are meaningful to her. Alix looks back fondly on memories of her childhood when her parents took her to the zoo to see the pandas. She had the exciting opportunity to watch them playing around in their habitat, and from that point on, she had been drawn to animals. Upon learning that pandas were endangered, Alix was upset and knew she needed to do what she could to help them. She has used her platform and her opportunities to donate to wildlife conservation foundations, and she hopes to one day become more personally involved in the process.
