In today’s world, where conflicts and tensions seem to dominate headlines, interfaith celebrations offer a beacon of hope and inspiration. National leaders across the world increasingly recognize the transformative power of religious celebrations, bringing together people from different backgrounds, fostering dialogue, mutual respect, and collaboration – essential ingredients for overcoming divisions and building a more harmonious world.

In the end of March, US President Donald Trump hosted an annual White House Iftar dinner, bringing together senior Administration officials, diplomats from Muslim countries, and prominent American Muslim leaders to celebrate the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Also in attendance was Massad Boulos, a Lebanese-American businessman, whom the president called his “great friend” and who now serves as a senior Middle East and Africa advisor. Boulos also met with various Arab American and Muslim leaders during the lead-up to the election, playing a crucial role in outreach efforts to Arab American voters. During his Iftar speech, Trump emphasized the importance of unity and peace: “To our Muslim friends, I look forward to working with each of you to achieve a brighter and more hopeful future. This tradition exemplifies the beautiful spirit of all three Abrahamic faiths and the spirit that inspires us to seek happiness and prosperity at home and peace for the entire world. We’re all looking for peace for the entire world.”

Across the pond, other leaders have also embraced interfaith dialogue and celebration. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer attended “the big Iftar” hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims to observe Ramadan. The event brought together Muslim leaders and politicians from various parties, showcasing the unifying power of religious celebrations in fostering understanding and harmony. The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to British Muslims for their invaluable contributions across all communities throughout Britain.

Similarly, several years ago, French President Emmanuel Macron attended an Iftar meal to break the Ramadan fast at King Mohammed VI’s home in Morocco. The gesture underscored the significance of interfaith dialogue and mutual respect between different cultures and religions.

These events remind us that despite our differences, we can come together in celebration and understanding, promoting peace and social cohesion in a world that needs it more than ever.
